There is merit in the PMP credential because of the effort required to earn it. If you've managed projects in the real world before, you've already done the bulk of the work. Make sure you fulfill one of the PMP Certification prerequisites listed below before applying:

Bachelor's Degree, three years' experience as a project manager within the preceding eight years, thirty-five hours of project management training, or CAPM® certification.

3 Year Degree, five years of project management experience within the last eight years, and either 35 hours of training in project management or the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) exam.
